Kamiel Verschuren est un artiste visuel, conceptuel et interdisciplinaire néerlandais né en 1968, installé à Rotterdam (Pays-Bas). Il œuvre dans un contexte international et nourrit un intérêt particulier pour le domaine public et la position de l’artiste dans la société à partir de diverses perspectives: en tant que dessinateur, designer d’espace public, organisateur d’événements,  activiste social, observateur, professeur, conseiller urbain, artiste-paysagiste, producteur et publiciste. Pour lui, l’art est une plateforme ouverte et critique visant à engager le dialogue avec autrui, une conversation globale se produisant simultanément en plusieurs endroits, à laquelle chacun peut prendre part.

Jusqu’en 1998, Verschuren a travaillé à la compréhension et à l’élargissement du concept d’espace et de l’idée d’existentialisme, ce qui a donné lieu à la production d’œuvres littéraires (son-texte-vidéo), d’installations, d’art conceptuel, de dessins et de photographies. En 1998, il décide de changer de cap et commence à travailler de manière réaliste et participative, en se référant au contexte de la vie quotidienne dans lequel l’art doit s’insérer. Son travail ayant principalement lieu en dehors du monde de l’art, des musées et des galeries, Verschuren privilégie des activités qui aboutissent à des collaborations avec d’autres artistes et organisations, ainsi qu’à l’établissement de diverses fondations et initiatives d’artistes. Il prend part activement à des travaux collaboratifs au long cours avec, entre autres, FSKE-Studio Galleria, S-Air (Sapporo Artists in Residence), La Source du Lion au Maroc, East Street Arts à Leeds (Royaume-Uni), et doual’art au Cameroun.

De 1996 à 2005, il a réalisé plusieurs commandes publiques, en réajustant souvent la mission initiale en créant des exemples pour les acteurs politiques. Depuis 1998, il est étroitement impliqué dans le développement urbain et social de Rotterdam-Sud, où il vit et travaille. En 2000, il a commencé à réaliser plus de 60 projets et manifestations d’art publics, tels que les quatre premières éditions des Open Studios Charlois (2001-2004), les manifestations d’art internationales Something about Charlois/…iets over Charlois (2001-2003) et Moving in Free Zones (2007), les expositions OnSouth#1 et OnSouth#2 (2010), ainsi que plusieurs commandes allant de The Shadow of the Image (1996) et le MaastunnelMonument NL (2003), au plus récent De Schouwplaats (2014). Actuellement, avec la fondation Stedelinks010, Verschuren investit dans l’infrastructure sociale et physique de Rotterdam-Sud, mettant en place un ferry indépendant pour connecter le sud au nord de la ville, ainsi qu’un restaurant de quartier « pop-up » (Fondation Charlois aan het Water). Le but de toutes ces initiatives est de créer une vie publique, de mettre en relation les gens afin de les autonomiser des pouvoirs publics, de questionner l’autorité et de créer de la liberté, tout en assumant ses responsabilités.

Kamiel Verschuren (1968) is a conceptual interdisciplinary visual artist, living and working in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), and working in a broad international practice with a special interest for the public domain and the artist’s position in society from different positions; as a drawer, (spatial) designer, designer of public space, organizer, initiator, social activist, observer, teacher, urban advisor, landscape artist, producer and publicist; working individually and within divers partnerships with other artists and organizations.
For Verschuren art is an open critical platform to engage with others, a global conversation, happening simultaneously at different places in which one can take part and sometimes join or even become the subject.
Until 1998, Verschuren studied and worked on understanding and expending the concept of space and the idea of existentialism, often resulting in literary works (sound-text-video): installations, conceptual art, drawings, photo works and writings. He skilled himself to work in all media and techniques, except painting, as he believes there is no better or worse context for art. In 1998, he decided to shift directions and started to work within realism and participation; within the context of daily life, in which art has to create its own context to be meaningful and in which artists have to re-find their role as part of society. Verschuren: “True meaning can only be found in the encounter with others through working together and by participating”.
To mainly work outside the context of the art world, museum and galleries, the activities of Verschuren resulted in collaborations with other artists, organizations and the establishment of several foundations and artist initiatives. He is active in several long-term collaborations with a.o. FSKE-Studio Galleria, S-Air (Sapporo Artists in Residence), artists’ initiative La Source du Lion in Morroco, East Street Arts in Leeds (GB), and doual’art in Cameroon.
In 1996-2005, he completed several larger public commissions often re-setting the original assignment to realize art as public space and creating examples for policy makers to extend their practice and policies. Since 1998, he is closely involved with the urban and social development of Rotterdam South, where he works and lives. Starting in 2000, he initialized and realized over 60 public art projects and manifestations, such as the first four editions of the Open Studios Charlois (2001-2004), the international art manifestations Something about Charlois/…iets over Charlois (2001-2003) and Moving in Free Zones (2007), overview exhibitions OnSouth#1 and OnSouth#2 (2010) and several public commissions ranging from The Shadow of the Image (1996) and the MaastunnelMonument NL (2003) to more recently De Schouwplaats (2014). Currently, with foundation Stedelinks010 Verschuren is investing in the social and physical infrastructure of Rotterdam South, organizing an independent ferry boat to connect the south to the north of the city and a neighborhood pop-up restaurant (foundation Charlois aan het Water). The aim of all these projects and initiatives is to create public life in the south area of Rotterdam, to connect and empower people, question authority and to create freedom by taking on responsibility.
