Juan Fernando Herran

Juan Fernando Herran est un artiste colombien né en 1963. Diplômé des Beaux-Arts du Chelsea College of Art de Londres (Royaume-Uni), il vit à Bogotá (Colombie), où il enseigne l’art au sein de l’Université Los Andes.

Le travail d’Herran, élaboré au cours des trente dernières années, explore la réalité colombienne ainsi que ses strates culturelles, sociales et politiques. Ses projets traitent de sujets locaux comme la plantation et l’éradication du pavot à opium, la manière dont le cartel de Cali a financé l’élection présidentielle de Samper dans les années 90, les processus architecturaux menés par les habitants des quartiers marginaux des villes colombiennes et leurs conséquences quant à l’aménagement de l’espace public, ou encore la subculture développée autour de la moto à la fin des années 80 et au début des années 90 dans la ville de Medellín. Nombre de ses thèmes gravitent autour de l’exploration des structures de pouvoir et leur influence sur le contexte social.

Herran a exposé dans des musées prestigieux comme le Victoria and Albert Museum à  Londres, le Palais de Tokyo et le Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, le Station Museum of Contemporary Art de Houston, et le Palais de Velasquez, Musée national de la Reina Sofia à Madrid. Il a pris part à des événements internationaux comme les Biennales de Venise, de Liverpool, de la Havane et de São Paulo.

Récemment, il a montré son travail dans plusieurs expositions individuelles : Desiring Flows, National University Art Museum, Bogotá, 2016; Thousand Heroes, Heroes Monument, Bogotá, 2015; The Rounds, Nueveochenta Contemporary Art, Bogotá et Dizzying Domains, Ideobox, Miami, 2014; Spine, NC Arte, Bogotá, 2011; Steps, Bellotti Gallery, Madrid; et Holy Field, Eafit, Medellín, 2009. Il a reçu d’importantes distinctions comme le Prix Pictet Commission, Suisse, 2014, le First Prize Off Festival, Photo-Spain, Madrid, 2007, et le XI Colombian Ministry of Culture Grant, 2000.

Herran obtained his MFA at the Chelsea College of Art in London. He works as a tenured professor at the Art Department, Arts and Humanities Faculty at the Los Andes University in Bogotá, where he lives and works.
Herran’s work – developed along the last 30 years – explores Colombian reality, and its cultural, social and political layers. His projects address specific topics such as the plantation and eradication of the Opium Poppy, the way the Cali Cartel financed Samper´s Presidential Election in the 90´s, the architectural processes carried out by the inhabitants of marginal neighborhoods in Colombian cities and their consequences in the layout of public space, or the subculture developed around the motorcycle during the end of the 80´s and the beginning of the 90´s in the city of Medellín.
Many of his topics evolve around the exploration of power structures and their influence in the social context.
Herran exhibited in prestigious Museums, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Palais du Tokyo and the Modern Museum of the City of Paris, the Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston, and the Velazquez Palace, Reina Sofia National Museum, Madrid. He has taken part in international events such as the Venice, Liverpool, Habana and Sao Paulo Biennales.
